I joined Toucan to work on Facts at Your Fingertips, a desktop encyclopedia for Reader’s Digest. As an editor, I worked on Toucan Books subjects ranging from medicine to sport. Following Facts at Your Fingertips, I worked as scientific editor on three books in the Blue Planet series for BBC Worldwide, then as editor of London 1000 Wonders of Nature for Reader’s Digest. I also wrote my first book for Reader’s Digest while at Toucan, The Animal World.

I joined Planet Three to work on the Walking with Dinosaurs continuity series being produced for International Masters Publishers (IMP) and BBC Worldwide. Some months after starting production on the series, Planet Three obtained rights to produce a Walking with Dinosaurs magazine. I was asked to help develop the magazine and went on to write all of the articles for the first six issues.

Scintilla Editorial is a packaging company specialising in wildlife-based part-works. I was employed there initially to write articles for the Monster! continuity series being developed for IMP. I went on to write more than 20 articles for its Wildlife Explorer series and work as a copy editor on two other projects, Birds of the World and Illustrated Animal World.


Freelance Travel Writer
(December 1996–November 1997)

I spent a year travelling through India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. During that time I researched and wrote a number of travel and environment articles.

Hong Kong Business is a high-circulation, glossy monthly magazine aimed at the top end of the business market. As Staff Writer (Jan ’95–Jan ’96), I wrote mainly news, editorial and advertorial articles covering a broad range of topics. Other duties included headline creation and sub-editing copy. As Assistant Editor (Jan–Nov ’96), I continued with the above and in addition edited the magazine’s Lifestyle and Technology sections, commissioning work from freelance writers and photographers.
